Three English skills
Unless you qualify for an exemption, the officer evaluates speaking (during the interview conversation), reading (one of three sentences), and writing (one of three dictated sentences).
Official vocabulary
Reading and writing use defined USCIS vocabulary lists — people, civics words, places, holidays, and common verbs. Practice sentences built from those words, not random English textbooks.
Speaking tip
Speak clearly and answer the officer’s questions about your application. You do not need perfect grammar; you need to show you understand and can communicate in English.
