What to Expect at Your Naturalization Interview

A practical overview of the USCIS naturalization interview: application review, English test, and civics test.

Updated

Before you go

Bring the appointment notice and required documents. Review your N-400 answers — the officer will ask about your application and background. Study civics and English for your test version.

During the interview

An officer places you under oath, reviews your application, and tests English (speaking, reading, writing) unless you qualify for an exemption. Then comes the oral civics test from the official question list.

Civics scoring

2008 version: up to 10 questions, need 6 correct. 2025 version: up to 20 questions, need 12 correct. Officers may stop early once you pass or fail. Answer with the official serving at the time of your interview for questions that change.

Practice tip

Say answers out loud. The real test is oral. Use our speak mode and interview simulation so the format feels familiar on test day.
